How to choose

Flow rate and head height are the two variables that matter most. Flow rate is how quickly the pump moves nutrient solution; head height — the vertical distance the pump has to push water — reduces effective flow as it increases, so a pump's rated output won't necessarily hold at the top of a tall system.

For small nutrient tanks or a single propagation tray, the compact HP550 (550 L/H, 0.9m max head height) is enough. Most hobby NFT and drip systems suit the HP850 (850 L/H), while larger reservoirs, taller setups or multi-zone recirculating systems call for the HP1100 (1200 L/H).
