Why Water Treatment Matters in Hydroponics

Untreated tap water, fertiliser salt accumulation, and contaminated reservoirs are among the most common causes of root problems and irrigation failures in hydroponic grows. A simple water treatment routine — using a dechlorinator when filling your reservoir, a steriliser to keep pathogens in check, and a periodic salt rinse — gives your plants a cleaner environment to thrive in from start to finish.

How to Choose a Water Treatment

Starting with Tap Water

If you fill your reservoir from the tap, a dechlorinator is a straightforward first step. Australian municipal water supplies commonly use chloramine — which doesn't off-gas like chlorine — making a purpose-built dechlorinator more reliable than simply leaving water to sit overnight.

Keeping Reservoirs and Systems Clean

For recirculating systems (DWC, NFT, RDWC), a regular low-dose application of hydrogen peroxide helps prevent pathogen build-up and keeps root zones oxygenated. OXY-PLUS is available for in-store pick-up only due to its classification as a hazardous good.

Dealing with Salt Accumulation

Fertiliser salt build-up is inevitable over a grow cycle. Terra Aquatica FlashClean dissolves mineral deposits, corrects nutrient lockout, and can be used as a mid-cycle reset or as a final rinse before harvest — compatible with all systems and substrates including coco coir and soil.

Blocked drippers and feed-lines waste time and can stress plants. Flairform StopBloc is dosed at 0.2ml/L from seed to harvest and works continuously to resist deposit formation across your entire feed circuit, compatible with all nutrients and substrates.
