Buffered coco coir
Buffered coco coir is a pH-balanced, calcium-magnesium treated coconut substrate designed for hydroponic and soil-based growing. Rinsed to regulate salt and pH levels before packaging, it delivers excellent water retention and aeration for fast-growing crops. Our range includes UGRO Pure Professional Max Air Coco and RHP-certified CYCO Coco Coir, suited to both first-time growers and commercial setups.
Why buffered coco coir matters
Choosing the right grow medium determines how efficiently your plants take up water and nutrients. Unbuffered coco coir can lock out calcium and magnesium, causing deficiencies even when nutrient solutions are correctly mixed. Buffered coco coir solves this by pre-treating the fibre with a calcium-magnesium solution, stabilising cation exchange capacity (CEC) so nutrients are absorbed evenly. This makes it a forgiving, high-performance medium for both hydroponic systems and container growing.

How to choose the right buffered coco coir
Buffered vs unbuffered coco
Unbuffered coco coir needs pre-treating with a CalMag solution before use, adding an extra step and risk of inconsistent results. Buffered coco coir arrives pH-stable and ready to use straight from the bag — a better starting point for first-time growers, and a time-saver for busy commercial operations.
Compressed blocks vs loose bags
Compressed coco blocks are lightweight and space-efficient for transport and storage, expanding once hydrated. Loose, uncompressed coco — like UGRO Pure Professional Max Air Coco — is ready to use immediately with no rehydration step, which suits growers who want to transplant straight away.
Coco alone or blended with perlite
Pure coco coir holds more moisture, useful in drier environments or with less frequent irrigation. Coco/perlite blends, such as UGRO's Max Air range, add extra aeration for oxygen-hungry root zones — a good option for fast-growing crops or hand-watered setups where drainage matters more.
