Hydroponic clay pebbles, also known as Hydroton, LECA or expanded clay, are a reusable, pH-neutral grow medium prized for aeration and drainage in flood and drain, NFT and DWC systems. Clay pebbles (Hydroton/LECA) are a natural, semi-porous fired clay — affordable and widely used, but can chip or compact slightly with repeated washing. TetraBase is a manufactured recycled-polypropylene medium engineered to interlock and strengthen as roots grow, making it a more durable option for high-turnover commercial systems.
Choosing a bag size
Home growers running a single DWC bucket or small flood table are usually well served by a 4.5L or 10L bag. Larger flood and drain tables, NFT channels or multiple grow sites are more economical with a 50L bulk bag.
New vs reused media
Both clay pebbles and TetraBase can be reused indefinitely if rinsed and sterilised between grows. First-time buyers should budget for a thorough rinse before first use, as both mediums carry manufacturing dust straight out of the bag.
