šæ What Is Neem Oil?
Neem oil is one of the most popular natural pest control solutions used by home growers, hydroponic growers, and horticulturalists worldwide. It works both as a preventative treatment and a direct-contact solution for most pest and mite infestations on plants.
Neem oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seed kernels of the Neem tree (Azadirachta indica). The oil contains several active compounds including:
- š¬ Azadirachtin ā The most studied and potent compound in neem oil. It is a limonoid (a type of natural triterpenoid) that works primarily as an insect growth regulator (IGR). It mimics and disrupts ecdysone, the hormone insects need to moult and develop, effectively breaking their lifecycle. It also acts as a feeding deterrent and repellent.
- Nimbin ā A triterpenoid compound with documented antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. In pest control, it contributes to neem oil's repellent effect and is also studied for its role in disrupting insect physiology.
- Picrin ā A bitter compound (also called nimbidin in some literature) found in neem seed extracts. It contributes to the bitter taste that deters feeding insects and has demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal properties in research contexts.
- Sialin ā The least documented of the four in peer-reviewed literature. It is reported as a component of neem seed oil extracts, though detailed independent research on its specific mode of action is limited.
š Where Does Neem Oil Come From?
The Neem tree (Azadirachta indica) ā also known as Indian Lilac or Nimtree ā is one of two species in the genus Azadirachta. It is native to the Indian subcontinent, including India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, and grows naturally across tropical and semi-tropical regions.
Neem oil is extracted from the fruits and seeds of the tree, which are cold-pressed to produce a concentrated vegetable oil rich in bioactive compounds.
š”ļø What Does Neem Oil Do?
When applied to pest-affected plants, neem oil works through three key mechanisms:
- š« Disrupts the feeding cycle ā causing starvation in mites and other pests
- š Halts breeding cycles ā the active compound azadirachtin interferes with insect hormone systems, suppressing reproduction
- šØ Smothers and suffocates ā the oil physically coats and kills pests on direct contact
Neem oil is effective against a broad range of common plant pests, including:
- š·ļø All three types of spotted mites (including two-spotted and red spider mites)
- šŖ² Thrips
- š¦ Springtails
- š Caterpillars
Neem oil is considered safe and non-toxic to plants when used as directed. It is also widely used in human health applications ā including treatments for head lice, eczema, and dandruff ā which speaks to its generally gentle and natural profile.
š” A-Grade Tip: Always apply neem oil-based sprays during cooler parts of the day ā early morning or evening ā to avoid leaf burn and to allow the oil to absorb properly before the grow lights or sun heat up.
š Where Can You Get Neem Oil?
Neem oil is available in several forms ā powders, raw concentrates, and ready-to-use sprays. The most popular formulation we've found for hydroponic and indoor growers is MITE-RID (MR 24/7).
šæ Why We Recommend MITE-RID (MR 24/7)
MITE-RID is a concentrated, organically derived botanical oil blend that includes neem oil as a core active ingredient. It is specifically formulated to target two-spotted and red spider mite populations, as well as a wide range of other insect pests.
Key reasons growers choose MITE-RID:
- ā Creates a protective barrier on plants when used regularly
- ā Absorbed quickly by the plant, where it remains active for several days
- ā Any solution not absorbed rapidly biodegrades ā leaving no harmful residues
- ā Non-toxic to animals and plants when used as directed
- ā Suitable for soil, coco coir, hydroponics, and aquaponics
š Shop MR 24/7 MITE-RID at A-Grade Hydroponics ā available in 45ml and 250ml.
