🌱 What are humic and fulvic acids?
Humic and fulvic acids are organic acids formed as microbes break down decayed plant and organic matter over long periods, whether in soil, compost or leonardite (a mineral form of ancient organic matter). Fulvic acid is the smaller, more soluble fraction, and humic acid the larger, less soluble fraction — both carry a negative charge from oxygen-containing functional groups (mainly carboxyl and phenolic groups) along their molecular structure.
That negative charge is what gives humic and fulvic acids their two main functions in a grow: feeding microbial life in the growing medium, and binding to positively charged mineral nutrients (cations) such as iron, zinc, copper and manganese.

When a micronutrient binds to a humic or fulvic acid molecule, it’s held in a soluble, plant-available form — a process called chelation. Without this, many micronutrients react with other elements in the growing medium or nutrient solution and precipitate out, becoming locked up and unavailable to the plant. Chelated nutrients stay in solution and mobile, ready to be taken up at the root surface.
Uptake itself happens through the root’s own membrane transport systems, not simply because roots are more strongly charged than the humic acid molecule. Humic and fulvic acid additives are generally added directly to the nutrient reservoir alongside your regular base nutrients, rather than replacing any part of the existing feed. Because they’re a soil-derived input rather than a synthetic salt, they’re also compatible with beneficial microbial inoculants some growers add to their root zone, and with organic-style feeding regimes as much as fully synthetic hydroponic nutrients.
