Growing your favourite plants from seed can be extremely rewarding; there is something special about watching that first seed pop.
But sometimes it feels like your seeds will never germinate—how long is it meant to take anyway?
Every plant is different, and some seeds will take longer to germinate no matter what we do. Under optimum conditions:
- Tomato seeds: 4–6 days
- Parsnip seeds: ~14 days
- Avocado seed: up to 2 months
Knowing what you’re working with will help avoid the “will they or won’t they?” germination jitters. Be sure to read up on the seeds you are about to germinate.
If you want to germinate seeds quickly and successfully, you will need to create the optimum hydroponic germination environment.
Note: This guide is ideal for seeds like tomato, lettuce, and wheatgrass. Other seeds may require different germination conditions.
Equipment & Supplies (Hydroponic Seed Germination)
- Flexigerm 6-Pod Propagator System
- Round germination pads (included when you purchase the Flexigerm from A-Grade Hydroponics)
- Measuring jug & pipette
- Root tonic (seedling nutrient support)
- Heat mat & thermostat controller (if required)
Prepare for Fast Seed Germination
1. Seed Preparation
- Seeds that are old, large, or have a tough shell benefit from soaking overnight.
- Use a scarifying solution:
- 1ml hydrogen peroxide per 1L of water
2. Prepare the Flexigerm Propagator
- Ensure the Flexigerm propagator is clean and preferably sterilised
3. Dampen cotton pads
- Place cotton pads in Flexigerm Propagator base
- Mix a mild root tonic solution:
- 0.75ml per 1L of water
- Pour enough solution onto each cotton pad so that they are thoroughly moistened
- A-Grade preferred root tonics: CYCO Ryzofuel or CX Horticulture Regen-a-Root
4. Planting Seeds
- Place seeds on moistened cotton pads
- Place Flexigerm cover on top - the magnetic cover will stay in place!
6. Set Up Propagation Environment
- You can put the Flexigerm Propagator anywhere warm
- For speedy results, use a small heat mat to maintain constant temperature
- The Flexigerm Propagator does all the hard work by maintaining 100% humidity (critical for germination)
7. Temperature Control
- Ideal temperature: 24°C
- For consistent temps, use a thermostat controller
- Place heat mat under the propagator
- Position thermostat probe inside
Germination Timeline
- Under optimal hydroponic conditions, seeds typically germinate in 2–5 days
- If seeds have not germinated within 7 days:
- Mix root tonic solution: 75ml per 1L of water
- Add enough to moisten to each germination pad
After Germination
Once your sprouted seeds have tap roots:
- Using sterilised tweezers, remove sprouted seeds from Flexigerm and place 2-5mm into chosen grow medium
- Cover sprouted seeds with grow medium
- Lightly feed with a mild root tonic solution (every 2-3 days)
- Place seedlings under propagation lights (approx. 14 hours per day)
After 1-2 weeks, your seedlings will be ready to transition into your hydroponic growing system.
Summary: Key Factors for Quick Seed Germination
- High humidity (100% in propagator)
- Stable temperature (20–25°C)
- Proper moisture (not waterlogged germination pads)
- Use of root tonic for seedling support
- Quality propagation system like the Flexigerm propagator
