Growing autoflowers hydroponically rewards growers with a full seed-to-harvest cycle in just 8-12 weeks, making them one of the fastest ways to fill a hydroponic system with mature plants. Unlike photoperiod varieties, autoflowers are day-neutral, so they shift from vegetative growth to flowering on their own internal clock rather than in response to changing light hours. That single trait changes almost everything about how you transplant, light and feed them. Autoflowers are day-neutral, meaning they flower regardless of how many hours of light or dark they receive. This is different to regular genetics, which are short-day plants and depend on an extended dark period to trigger flowering.

Day-neutral vs short-day plants

Short-day plants vegetate best under extended daylight hours. When the far-red phytochrome (P-fr) stores built up during the light period cannot fully decay before the lights come back on, the plant stays in a vegetative state. Once dark periods stretch beyond around 12 hours, P-fr fully decays and phytochrome triggers flowering & this is called facultative photoperiodism, since flowering is only accelerated, not required, by the induced dark period.

Some varieties have an absolute requirement for long nights before they will flower at all & these are classified as long-night plants, and the mechanism is known as obligate photoperiodism. Autoflowers sidestep this process entirely, which is what allows a fixed, simple lighting schedule from seed to harvest.


Transplanting autoflower seedlings the right way

Autoflowers have limited time to build a root system, so the pot-up sequence matters more than it does with photoperiod plants.

  • Start the seedling in a much smaller pot than the final container & a large first pot slows early root development.
  • Germinate the seed in a starter plug or cube.
  • Once the seedling has its first pair of serrated true leaves, transplant the plug into a 100ml pot filled with a 70:30 coco-to-perlite mix.
  • Let the seedling develop in this pot for 7-14 days.
  • Once a solid root ball has formed, transplant carefully into the final pot, wearing gloves to avoid damaging the root zone.
  • In the final pot, feed daily. Keep the medium moist rather than saturated & if it is saturated, reduce feed volume and encourage the plant to draw the excess moisture down.
